Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about SmolPixel.

General

Is SmolPixel really free?
Yes! Our image resizing and optimization tools are completely free to use without limits. The AI Alt Text generator has a generous free tier (10 images/hour) to manage API costs, but remains free for all users.
Do I need to create an account?
No account is required. You can start using all our tools instantly without signing up or providing an email address.
Are my images secure?
Security is our priority. SmolPixel's tools run entirely in your web browser. This means your photos never leave your device and are never stored or processed on a server.

Image Resizer

What is 'Smart Crop' or 'Cover' mode?
Cover mode intelligently crops your image to fill the exact dimensions you specify, centering the image. This is perfect for social media posts where you need to avoid black bars or whitespace.
Does resizing reduce quality?
We use high-quality lanczos-like downscaling in the browser to maintain sharpness. However, scaling images UP significantly will always result in some blurriness. It's best to start with a high-resolution image.
Can I resize multiple images at once?
Currently, we support single image workflow with "Bundle Mode" to generate multiple sizes from one source. Bulk batch uploading is coming in a future update!

Image Optimizer

How much can I reduce file size?
It varies by image, but saving 50-80% is common, especially when converting PNGs to WebP formatted images.
What is WebP format?
WebP is a modern image format developed by Google that provides superior compression for images on the web. It is smaller than JPEG and PNG but maintains high quality.
Max file size limit?
Our tools run entirely in your browser using standard algorithms, so they can handle very large files (50MB+ depending on your device). There is no hard server-side limit because nothing is uploaded.

SEO and Web Performance

What is the best image format for SEO?
WebP is currently the best format for SEO because it provides the fastest load times. However, ensure you have proper alt text and descriptive filenames (like blue-running-shoes.webp) to help search engines understand your images.
Should I convert all images to WebP?
Yes, in most cases. WebP is the gold standard for web performance in 2024. It is natively supported by all modern browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge) and offers significantly better compression than JPG or PNG.
Does image size affect Google rankings?
Yes, significantly. Google uses Core Web Vitals (specifically Largest Contentful Paint) as a ranking factor. Large, unoptimized images slow down your page load speed, which can lead to lower search rankings and higher bounce rates.
What image size is best for websites?
For most blog and content websites, a width of 1200px is ideal for large images. For full-screen hero backgrounds, 1920px is better. Always aim to keep the file size below 200KB for clear layouts and under 100KB for small blog images.
Can image compression improve Core Web Vitals?
Absolutely. Optimized images directly improve Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) by allowing hero images to load faster. It also helps reduce Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) if you serve correctly sized images.
